LAST WILL OF JESSE ALSOP

Written and recorded in Hardeman County, Tennessee on November 3, 1836
In the name of God, Amen, I, Jesse Alsop of the County of Hardeman and State of Tennessee being of sound mind, but feeble health do make this my last Will and Testament: First: I desire that all my just debts should be paid as early as possible. Secondly: I give and bequeath to Milley a Free person of Colour living with me, a Bay Mare and Colt and three head of milch cows, also all my household and kitchen furniture to her and her children and for their use and benefit. Thirdly: The place I live on in Hardeman County, I will and bequeath unto the said Milley and her children as a Homestead to live on and derive support. Fourthly: I desire that my Negroes, Winnie, Elija, Eviline and one boy now in my possession in Hardeman County, and three others belonging to me at my sisters in Goochland County, State of Virginia, to be hired out either publicly or privately as my Executors hereinafter mentioned my think best and for their comfort and the income derived there of now to be appropriated to the Educating of the Children of the said Milley, which are of my body, and otherwise maintaining them. Fifthly: The rest and residue of my property, both real and personal, it is my desire should be sold to constitute a part of the fund for educating and maintaining my said Children as expressed above. Sixthly: It is my wish that my executors hereinafter mentioned should act as the guardians of my five children while they remain under age, and in case they should decline that duty, that then in that case they should assist them with their aid and council in obtaining some responsible and competent friend or friends to undertake that duty. Seventhly: I hereby appoint my friend Pitser Miller and E. R. Belcher of Boliver the sole executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former Wills by me made. In Witnesses whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal the 3rd day of November A.D. 1836.
