During the Civil War, is was a customary practice for the Confederate Army to send troops around to the people’s homes looking for conscripts to enroll for compulsory military service. Tobe Medlock said he owned no slaves and didn’t believ in slave ownership he would not go fight for the cause. He and some of his enighbors kept watch for the troops and would go hide in the woods until they were gone. One time Tobe hid out over night in a hollow log in the woods and in the morning his hair was frozen to the log and he couldn’t get out. Finally some of his family came to look for him and came to his rescue. He never did have to served in the war.
